The Problem...

THIS IS A SHARED CONCERN:

WHY READING AND PLAY MATTERS?

Improves Communication and Critical Thinking
Enhances Writing and Cognitive Skills
Builds Empathy
Stimulates Creativity
Shapes Identity and Goals
Character on books
Supports Emotional Health
Promotes Balance and Well-being
Boosts Creativity and Exploration

Fosters Teamwork and Social Skills
THE PROCESS

In this study, the Double Diamond process guided the design of NaturCycle’s app through four phases: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver.

Double Diamond Process
  • Discover: Identified user needs for sustainable beauty solutions through research.
  • Define: Refined insights into actionable goals, such as promoting recycling engagement.
  • Develop: Ideated and prototyped key features, including AR try-ons and recycling tracking.
  • Deliver: Polished and tested designs to ensure an intuitive, eco-conscious user experience.

COMPETITVE AUDIT

To understand what other companies are doing, I analyzed businesses offering online apps for kids.

USER RESEARCH

Two surveys (2020 and 2021) and interviews with parents were conducted.

1

2020

19 questions

455 people answered

Using previous research, it was created to determine the target audience would be and what the personas would look like

2

2021

42 questions

42 people answered

The objective is to understand children's digital and school reading habits

I interviewed 10 parents to understand their children's reading challenges and how they are currently addressing them.

SURVEY RESULTS

The surveys confirmed much of the information found in previous research but brought up several interesting insights.

93.5% USE

some type of mobile device, such as a cell phone or tablet.

95.7% SPEND

more than two hours per day on mobile device. This is more than the recommended daily use of electronics for children over six years old by the
Brazilian Association of Pediatrics.

51.7% OF PARENTS

say that they have control over everything their kids do on their mobile devices.

93.6%
OF PARENTS ARE WORRIED

about what their children see on the internet.

65.6%
WOULD PAY

$5,00 monthly for a safe platform for book streaming.

57.2% DECIDE

how to spend the family's money.

32.3%
WHO ANSWERED

the survey was post-graduate.

60.2% SOUTHEAST

answered the survey were from Southeast. It will be necessary to do another more specific survey to see what the other regions say.

80.6% WOMEN

were prevalent among the people who replied to the questionnaire.

SWOT ANALYSIS

A SWOT analysis is designed to facilitate a realistic, fact-based, and data-driven look at the strengths and weaknesses of an organization, its initiatives, or its industry.

Strengths
  • Innovative, tech-driven platform.
  • Focus on fostering meaningful child-parent interactions.
  • Accessible and inclusive design.

S

Threats
  • Emergence of new competitors.
  • Low engagement with reading in certain regions.
  • Lack of a strong reading culture for children.

T

Weakness
  • New and unestablished brand.
  • Platform still in development.
  • Limited features in the first MVP.

W

Opportunities
  • Partnerships with independent authors.
  • Potential to expand to local and regional markets.
  • Growing demand for personalized digital solutions.
  • Adaptability for diverse learning needs.
  • Gamified features to boost engagement.

O

PERSONAS

After collecting all the information, two personas were created: Isabela (end-user) and Carlos (responsible for managing his the money).

Problem statement

Isabela is a kid who needs to find a new way to play because she doesn't enjoy what is currently available to her.

Problem statement

Carlos is a father who needs safer ways for his kids to play because he doesn't have time to supervise them constantly.

USER JOURNEY

User journey was created to identify the pain points and feelings that the user might go through while is trying to use a reading app.

IDEATING

Before starting to create solutions, the surveys results where analysed and created a primary users flow, CSD and effort x knownledge matrix.

With this data, a CSD matrix was designed

FLOW DIAGRAM

To outline all the necessary functionality, I create a simple flow diagram of the main tasks that user can do.

PAPER WIREFRAME

Before start to create a digital, I created a paper wireframe, so I could test if the user flow was good.

LOW FIDELITY PROTOTYPE

The flow of the registration user is different according to the age he initially indicates.

The application will be created entirely on the basis of illustrations and icons, making it as fun as possible for children.

USABILITY TEST-FINDINGS

Two usability tests were made with children from 6 to 11 years old.

Round 1 findings

1

Change the sign in flow for kids.

2

Despite using icons, provide more descriptions for them.

3

Easier way to see the plans

The first test used the low-fidelity prototype
Round 2 findings

1

More contrast at colors

2

More explanation about the levels in the universe

The second test featured a refined high-fidelity prototype, updated based on survey feedback.
ACCESSIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS

2

WEBSITE AND FIRST MVP OF NEBULA

TAKEWAYS

IMPACT

"This app will help several kids around the world. My daughter wants to use it!"

What I learned
  • There is a lack of apps that help kids to read in a fun way.
  • It is important to pay attention to colors and usability
  • Sometimes, you can find a lot of useful information on the internet.
  • It is easier to design the app in Figma than to find someone to develop it.
  • Planning is important to a good project

NEXT STEPS

1
Developer team create the app.

The development team must create the application so that we can test it with real users.

2
Do a beta test.

Before the official release, it will be good to do an initial test to check not only bugs in the application but if the flow is ok or if you need to change something before the release.

3
Make all changes and launch the product.

After the beta test, it will be necessary to review if anything else needs to be changed before releasing the product
